Term 4

We've been busy this term.

Reindeers, framed pictures and Xmas wreaths to hang around our reindeers necks not to mention the regular round of drawing and painting.
We used licorice allsorts to learn about perspective and lollies in lolly jars to look at the effect of layers. All in all, I think it prooved to be a busy six weeks. (I'll post those photo's as soon as I've found the battery charger to charge my camera...)

Handbags and Pictures...

What a busy day. I decided to run two workshops on the same day but with small groups for the school holidays. It's a good idea doing it all in one day but not so good for the soles of the feet. I had two great groups of girls eager to put together their own little creations.

The morning group did a great array of paintings simply using food colouring as their painting medium. I love the stuff. You really can't beat the colour you get. Their finished artwork featured everything from the car parked in the driveway through to a mermaid taking an alligator for a walk. I just love their imagination and where it takes them. To be able to preserve that in a frame is truly precious.

My wonderful second group who completed the funky flower bag workshop were obviously pleased with their efforts as you can tell by the looks on their faces. Not bad for two hours. And they navigated the sewing machine with ease...

End of Term

To finish off the term we combined some of the artwork that the kids had done during the term to frame ready for display. I was so please with the results I wanted to keep them myself. It was a real wrench handing them over but when you saw the look on their faces at just how good their work was it was worth it. They really are raising the quality for next term though.

Framed

Paper paper paper everywhere. That's what happened this week when I showed the group how to frame their artwork.

They used one of the pieces of paper to which they'd applied a coloured wash to as the background and then added one of their favourite pictures in the foreground. I think you'd agree that they've done a great job.

Week 7 Already

Where has the term gone?

This week we added colour to the wonderful array of beach huts the kids finished drawing last week. They used a colour wash all over them then added highlights using watercolour pencils.

I can't wait to see them all in frames. And looking at their faces, I think they enjoyed it too.

Beach Huts

This week we talked about the colourful beach huts you find on the beaches. Sadly I don't think we have them in Western Australia but their are a number of beaches in the Eastern States where you can find them along with the UK too. I love them. So much so that a couple of years back I built one for my girls as a cubby complete with it's own sign.

To begin with we started painting our own beach house which my wonderful stepdad had cut out of some leftover timber (which explains the unusual shape of the roof), though we only completed the base colour so far.

All the kids had to draw their idea of a beach hut. As you can see, we ended up with all sorts of shapes and sizes. Next week they can have free reign adding colour using watercolours and/or pencil them in. I can't wait to see how they all turn out.

I forgot to mention that our topic for this term is the sea. We've talked about the shape of dolphins, starfish, seahorses and coral to name a few and even looked at how they are illustrated in books. This week we looked at the details found on shells, starfish and sea sponges, the circles, waves and bumps in their surfaces, and all had a turn drawing some of them. We then set up a still life (above) and set about drawing this.
After all that drawing they needed some colour so the group was given the choice of chalk pastels, oil pastels and pastel pencils to colour in their artwork.
